A slope failure in which material moves downslope along a planar or shallowly undulating surface with little internal rotation of the moving mass; movement commonly follows a pre‑existing plane of weakness such as bedding, foliation, or a weathered horizon.

Illustrative scenario — Situation: a road cut exposes bedding planes dipping toward the valley; after heavy rain, a slab detaches and slides along the bedding. Recognition: intact blocks resting on a distinct plane with little tilting. Action: reduce driving load, install anchors and a retaining structure, and improve drainage along the plane.
